Tide Valve Operation

The City of Newport Beach operates, maintains and cleans 89 tide valves that are used to prevent high tides from entering the storm drain system and flooding low-lying parts of the City. City staff manually open and close the tide valves when a tide reaches a certain level. At times, however, when tide valves are closed, inclement weather causes unpreventable flooding of low-lying City streets.
For questions regarding tide valves and their operation, please call the Storm Drain and Street Sweeping Division at 949-718-3477.
